To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Ack! I'm having serious problems with my STe system. If anybody
could offer some wisdom, I would appreciate it!
Symptoms:
(The first problem I caught) - MINT.CNF suddenly appeared
with random data scattered throughout the "normal" text.
The Desktop is now mistaking executables for Text files,
and is asking me if I want to view them. This
is happening perhaps 10% of the time, and I have
NEVER had this problem (in 6 months of intense use).
MiNT 0.92 is hanging much more often than usual - basically,
anything involving a large file operation, like
running GCC.
On most large hard drive read operations my screen is
overwritten with data :-(
Odd crashes every so often (usually non-repeatable).
On reset, the screen doesn't clear - so if I reboot from
the desktop, my hard drive boot is overlaid on the
old Desktop image.
My Hardware:
Atari 520STe (w/ TOS 1.62, bought in August 1991) - 4MB of RAM
ICD Host Adapter (original model) + Seagate ST1096N drive
DEKA PC Keyboard Adapter (w/ keyboard)
SM124 Mono Monitor
Does anybody recognize these problems? I think they're serious
and there's NO WAY that Atari's going to take back my computer under
warranty :-(... Eek!

Wrong. The posting I made was not saying that only Atari users should
read this newsgroup. The point is if you dont have anything productive
to say, dont say it. Dont go bashing Atari for no reason. I said
before, and again, I like to read comparisions about different machines,
but youve got to support your claims with evidence, not, my computer
is better than yours.
All I am saying is that the people who own Ataris own them of their
own free will. A while back, someone posted an Atari ST for sale, and
this Miller guy posted that it was a joke. Perhaps he didnt think that
the seller was upgrading to a new ST?
And I dont really care that there are other, better, etc, machines
than what I own. Perhaps you should think twice before thinking that
is true. I own approx 20 different computers of different architecures,
and I would not rate any one of them as better or worse than any
other of them. I call myself a collector, I collect computers.
Currently of interest is my VAX 11/730, a MicroPDP-11, and an
AT&T UnixPC (aka 3b1).
Shall I compare? Its impossible. The VAX has a great user interface,
if you like CLIs. Its also multitasking, regardless to personal
opinion. The PDP-11, well, thats mostly a curio (sp?), considering
that its the oldest computer architecture that is still supported, etc,
today. The first PDP-11 (11/20) was produced in 1970, and in 1992, the
latest model that I know of is the 11/83 & 11/84. 20+ years is a helluva
shelf live... IBM mainframes can kinda claim that, but theyve
dont other stuff... I digress.
And perhaps it occured to you, or not, that I once did own an Amiga,
but no longer. If you know my name and postings, youll know that the
reason I dont own one is the users attitude turn me off. Atarians
know what they have, and like it.
(BTW: my next addition to my collection will hopefully be either
a Sun 3/60, and a MicroVAX 2000. The MicroVAX uses less power than
my 730, and I can fit it on my desk :-)
Apples to oranges...

Well here's my 2 cents worth of qualms about my Atari...
a. When I first got my 1040STf in 1986, it came with TOS 1.0.
The 1040STf had the same version until June 1991 when I opted
for a MegaSTE4. The original TOS was limited (user-wise) and
a little buggy.
b. Hated (when I never knew about RAMdisks plus when I couldn't
afford a hard drive AND when I only had one drive) copying
files (4 disk swaps for 1 file (2 verification, read, write).
c. Hated (and still hate) the mushy keyboard. Developed painful
wrists. (LOVE my MSTE's keyboard).
d. Hated the internal drive noise especially when the plastic
casing is cold and it's touching the drive mechanism itself.
The noise dropped as the computer warmed up (since plastic
expands when the power supply is on for awhile).
I guess that's all I can think of right now...

Hello world--
Does anyone have experience using FASTVMS.EXE, the "fast ST <> VAX
transfer program" available at atari@terminator? It only unpacks to a VAX
executable, which I've got installed on the VAX and seems to be in working
order; but what am I supposed to be running at my end in order to
communicate with it?
Any and all hints much appreciated...

I had a problem connecting to a Telibit modem with my HST and the solution there
was to put a couple commas after the number to allow the modem to not see any
of the tones placed by the telibit until it would see the part of the tone that
it would like...
I now have a 100% hit ratio on the modem... Before I only connected once out of
every 8 times.

Of course, there are guidelines and 'establishing principles' that should
probably be observed. For instance, comp.sys.atari.st is oriented toward Atari
ST computers, not Amigas or NeXT or Macintosh computers. One would expect
information in the newsgroup to relate to the Atari ST.
By Mr. Carter's logic, one should feel free to post about abortion in
comp.sys.amiga.advocacy (for example) with relative impunity. After all, 'you
post where you want'....
For those who don't see (or don't want to see) that there are certain
principles which, when followed, enhance the learning and enjoyment one may
obtain through reading a newsgroup, I would point them to the articles posted
every month in news.announce.newusers. There are articles on 'netiquette' and
'posting rules' which it would seem Mr. Carter omitted from his reading
schedule ...

Yes ONE WOULD expect to find information about ST's in atari..rn. But in
no way MUST it be that way.

Yeah! MR.CARTER. I LIKE that. And yes, if you want to post about abortion in
comp.sys.atari.st, feel free to do so.
Although, I wouldn't.

Yes, I have principles which I follow, based on a philosophy that observes
that information is light, and the mind is the lens. Focus on what you
will...too, many times in histories past has information been focused for
people deemed too idiotic to find or interpret their own views from what
they read.
The reason why everything is arranged the way it is, is because rn hasn't
caught up with the times. In fact, rn is incredibly crude. There are much
better ways to arrange all of this information.
And, what makes you think this particular arrangement fosters learning?
RN is probably the most confusing program on the net. Its horrible
to work with. Although, I am working on that, through PC technology. :)

What makes a good netter to you, might not be great for others. This is all
based on the expression of the human condition in dealing with technology.
The wide differences in technology backgrounds each one of us shares gives
very different viewpoints on what to express, or to emphasize what is most
important to us.
You simply don't have a right to deny a persons experiences just because
they aren't excatly the same as yours when dealing with this technology.
So post what you want people. And lets continue the discussion!

You would require the board which involves pulling the CPU.
The US set would not reconize any special UK keys you might have. Some

I have 2 machines which came w the 6 chip set, and one that came with the 2

I put the 2 chip set into all 3 machines. All I had to do was move a resistor
and place a jumper between 2 pads. (And plug in the 2 chip set...)
Works GREAT!

As Atari has decided to do another change, the Roms will be TOS 2.07, may
be next Xmas when they will be available, but then it could be TOS 12345..
No you can't get UK Roms in the USA, why not give Atari UK, a ring

Subject: Zoo problems continue
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I have this annoying problem with zoo. I have an old TOS (probably 1.0) and
therefore cannot use Zoo without a shell. Someone was kind enough to mail
me a shell and zoo still does not work. I think that my Tos is simply too
old but I'm not sure. I also tried downloading that "starter.tos" program
from an archive but it also does absolutely nothing.
Does anyone know why zoo will not work even with a shell?
I suspect the Tos, but can't substantiate it.
I think I'll do something less frustrating like read uncommented
Assembly code :-).
Thanx
